For those of you who have two-way radios, tune them to channel 7, code 0.

Weekly Events

Tuesday Morning Kayak Touring: Meet at 10 a.m. at the Whiskey Creek boat ramp. Approx. 2 hours. Bring kayak, snacks and water. Leaders: Fran B. 243-3994 , Pat L. 722-1052 .

Weekday Downhill Skiing at Mt. Shasta Ski Park. During JANUARY & FEBRUARY There will be "Blue Bird " weekday downhill skiing. Each Sunday evening an e-mail (or phone call for the uninitiated) will be sent to all that sign up as being interested in any one of the nine weekday trips to Mount Shasta Ski Park. Based upon the 5 day forecast of weather, the most likely good weather day will be selected from the following Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Once the day is selected, the group will meet at the south end of the Shopko parking lot at 8:00 AM on the designated weekday. In order to assist carpooling it would be desirable to notify the event leader: Burt B. 246-4721 .  Signups can be at any Flatlander, or call Burt.

January 2006

Saturday, January 28th- Downhill Ski Day at Mt. Shasta Ski Park. Meet at 8am ShopKo Parking lot. Enjoy a day of downhill skiing at the Mt. Shasta Board and Ski Park. Do not ski yet? See the 1,2,3 Intro Package. Meet at 8am at ShopKo to carpool to the Ski area. Lunch at 11:30 am at the lodge. Leader: Nancy G. 246-0847 .

Sunday, January 29th - Geocaching in the Snow! Join us for a fun adventure of snowshoeing and treasure hunting. 4+ miles roundtrip, intermediate level hike. We will attempt three caches, all are in the same general area. The hike begins at Manzanita Lake in Lassen Park. We will hike in the general direction of the Hoodoo rock formation. Please remember to bring your GPS if you have one. Dress warm and pack a lunch. Bring snowshoes, water, poles and something hot to drink. Meet in the Gottschalk's parking lot at 8:00 am. February 2006

Saturday, February 4th - Snowshoe Chaos Crags in Lassen Park. Intermediate level snowshoe with approx 900 feet of elevation gain over a 2.5 mile (one way) trip to a ridge just below Chaos Crags on the North Side of the Park. Be ready to leave Gottschalk's parking lot at 9:30am for carpooling or meet at the North Ranger Station in Lassen Park at 10:30am. Please dress appropriate for the weather. Toward the top of the ridge we will become slightly exposed/less protected by trees. Bring water and food for a lunch stop at the top. Cross Country Skis are also welcome as this trail is very wide open. Don't forget your park pass or pay entry fee of $10.00 per vehicle. Leader: Jeff W. 246-3771 .

Saturday, February 4th - Snow Play Day at Mt. Shasta. Build snowmen, sled, and play in the snow. Bring a lunch, drinks, and snow toys. Meet at the "end of the road" at Bunny Flat (Everitt Memorial Hwy). 11:30 am. Leader: Steve P. 243-5122 

Monday, February 6th - Monthly "Flatlander" Meeting. Join us for pizza, and hear about past and future events. Jennifer Powell from the Shasta Land Trust will be giving a talk on the issue of horses, bikes, and pedestrians sharing our trails. 7pm, at the Round Table Pizza in the Mt. Shasta Mall. NOTICE OF SPECIAL AGENDA ITEM FOR THE FEBRUARY 2006 FLATLANDER MEETING: A membership vote will be held to amend the Articles of Incorporation of We Ski II at the February 6, 2006 Flatlander meeting held at 7:00PM at the Round Table Pizza meeting room in the Mt Shasta Mall, Redding, California. The Board proposes to change Section II B. of the Articles, which currently reads, "The specific purpose of this corporation is to provide recreation activities for its members.", to read: "The specific purpose of this corporation is to identify opportunities for and facilitate participation in recreational activities by its members."

Friday, February 10th - "Fullish" Moon Hike at Lake Shasta Bailey Cove Trail. A beautiful, easy 3 mile walk overlooking Lake Shasta. Meet at the Mt. Gate Forest Service Ranger Station (Wonderland Blvd exit on I-5) at 6 PM. Parking permits not required. Bring water and a headlamp or flashlight. Rain cancels. If in doubt, call. Saturday, February 11th- Snowshoe Emigrant Trail in Lassen. We did this hike two years ago. Enough climbing to call intermediate fitness. Meet at Gottschalk's at 8 am to carpool. Four wheel drive vehicles with snow tires best. Bring snowshoes, poles, water, lunch, layered clothing. Leader: Dave K. 410-4462

Sunday, February 12th - Bird Viewing Walk at the Monolith. Meet at 9:00 AM at the Monolith Parking Lot, Turtle Bay. We'll be walking in the vicinity of Turtle Bay and observing, identifying and discussing birds. Bring binoculars and a bird book it you have one and dress warmly. Rain cancels - if in doubt, call. Saturday, February 18th - Davis Gulch Hike. Enjoy a great winter hike. This is a good time of year to see and hear small mountain streams and the quiet beauty of Whiskeytown Lake. This is a moderate 6.8 mile hike, with 600 feet elevation gain. Bring lunch, water, warm clothes and umbrella if necessary, rain will not cancel but snow will. Park pass required. Meet at 10:00 am at the Whiskeytown Visitor Center. Leader: Judy F. 722-9454

Sunday, February 19 Birthday Road Ride. Meet at Palo Cedro Park and Ride at 9:00 for a 56 mile road ride to Black Butte, via Millville, Parkville, Ash Creek and Wild Cat. The ride route will offer beautiful views of snow covered Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. This ride is moderately strenuous due to distance and climbing. Rain or snow cancels. Leader: Diane B. 246-3130 .

Saturday, February 25th - Family Bike Ride. Bike ride on the flat and wide Sacramento rail trail. Kid's bikes, trailers, tag-a-longs all welcome. Helmets required. Ride at your own pace and distance. Meet at Keswick boat ramp. 10:30 am. Leader: Steve P. 243-5122 

Sunday, February 26, X-County Ski/Snowshoe to Butte Lake area. Enjoy the snow-covered trees as we X-Country ski/snowshoe to Butte Lake on a snow-covered gravel road. This road climbs moderately over 7 miles (one way) to Butte Lake, but people can turn around any time they feel tired. If you are hoping to make it to Butte Lake, X-Country skies are preferred as you will go faster. This adventure depends greatly on snow conditions and is subject to change. Meet at 8 am at Gottschalk's to carpool (parking is very limited off of Hwy 44). Bring skies/snowshoes, poles, warm clothes, water, lunch, sun screen, etc. Chain requirements will cancel Leader: Sara S. 246-3771

March 2006

Friday, March 3 - Sunday, March 5 - Winter get-a-way to Clair Tappaan Lodge in the Donner area of Tahoe. Activities include downhill ski/board, or X-country ski/snowshoe at Sugar Bowl, Royal Gorge, Donnor Ski Ranch, and Soda Springs (free shuttle to ski areas). The Clair Tappaan Lodge is owned by the Sierra Club. The lodge is set up like a hostel with bunk beds and shared bathrooms. Each guest is expected to participate in a light chore each night of stay (helping with meals or cleaning). Cost is approximately $100 for adults and $64 for children (this includes 6 meals/person and 2 nights lodging, but does not include lift fees). Bring: recreational equipment, snacks, sleeping bag, & towel. Payment due by January 31 - no exceptions! Members only. Leader: Sara S. 246-3771

Monday, March 6th - Monthly "Flatlander" Meeting. Join us for pizza, and hear about past and future events. Club member Tim Weaver will be presenting a slide show and talk on "16 Days on a Raft in the Grand Canyon". 7pm, at the Round Table Pizza in the Mt. Shasta Mall.

Saturday March 11th - Sunday March 19th, 2006 - Utila Island, British Honduras. Join We Ski II in a weeklong sun vacation on one of Honduras's premier Caribbean Islands. Utila is the cheapest place in the world to get your PADI open water SCUBA diving certification (this year $199) and dives are very reasonable (currently 10 dives for $175 with all equipment and lunch). Snorkeling is available just off the shore on pristine reefs or with a short boat ride. Kayaks are available to rent and I am researching wind surf equipment. Deposit of $250 will be due by October 1st . More details TBA  Approximate cost $1000 per person. Leader: Nancy G. 246-0847

Saturday, March 18th - Top of The World Mountain Bike Ride. Loop ride to a scenic spot right here in Redding.  Leave Holiday Market on Placer & Buenaventura at 10:00 AM.  Approximately 9 - 10 miles total riding.  Intermediate skills and fitness needed due to amount of climbing.  Off-road riding will be on gravel roads and single-track.  Bring your own water/snacks.  Helmets required.  Leader: Steve P. 243-5122 

Sunday, March 19th - Good Riddance to Winter Road Bike Ride. Join us for 30 miles of rolling hills on the east side. Meet at the Lema Ranch parking lot at 10 am.  This will be an intermediate level ride out to Millville Plains, with a possible stop at Michael's Bakery. Rain cancels. Leader: Gary G. 221-4740 .

Sunday, March 26th - Hike and Shop. Hike to Feather Falls (28 miles east of Oroville) and shop at the new Chico Trader Joe's. Feather Falls is a moderate 8.8 mile hike with a 900 feet elevation gain and the high point is 2400 feet. The 640 foot falls is the sixth highest in the contiguous U.S. and the fourth highest in CA. Bring lunch, water, warm clothes, umbrella (rain will not cancel) and ice chest for transporting cold goodies home from T.J's. Meet at Gottschalk's parking lot at 7:00am. Leader: Judy F. 722-9454

Sunday, March 26th - Mountain Bike Oak Bottom/Tower House Trail.  Beginner/intermediate level ride. Meet at the trail head near the entrance to Oak Bottom Marina at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area at 10 AM. Park pass required. Bring water and snacks. Helmets mandatory. April 2006

Sunday, April 2nd - "Northern Tier" Road Bike Ride. Help Judy celebrate her 64th birthday by doing a 64 mile road bike ride. Bring food and water. Meet at the Lema Ranch parking lot at 9am. Leader: Judy F. 722-9454

Monday, April 3rd - Monthly "Flatlander" Meeting. Join us for pizza, and hear about past and future events. 7pm, at the Round Table Pizza in the Mt. Shasta Mall.

Friday April 7th - Tuesday April 11th - Sea Otter at Monterey. Spend 5 days and 4 nights in beautiful Monterey. Bring toys: kayak Monterey Bay and Elkhorn Slough, mountain bike old Fort Ord (BLM) and Toro Park, ride the 17 Mile Drive, road bike the Big Sur Coast and hike the Pinnacles National Monument. Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Carmel, lunch at Nepenthe on Big Sur coast, cool your feet in the river at Big Sur River Inn and lunch at historic Steinbeck House in Salinas. The Sea Otter Classic at Laguna Seca coincides with this trip. Accommodations at Monterey Hostel, $25 / night, dormitory style only. Arrangements can be made for those limited only to the weekend.
